Guinea pigs were first brought to England a long time ago as pets. Queen Elizabeth had one and they gained popularity quickly as pets. At Sir Winslow's Zoo, they were also pets for his children after being given them as gifts by their aunt. There was a special spot in the nursery where the guinea pigs could run around and munch on carrots. The favorite of all of the children's was one named Zippy. He would zip up one arm and down the other if you sat very still. It was very amusing to watch.
