What came first
Now that you all know how the zoo got its start let’s talk about the different animals in the zoo and my plans - and maybe yours for more!
The first stuffed animal pillows that I made were of course the owl. After a request from my daughter for one, I made three - I can never do things small! One for Emily, one for Anna and the last one was sold 15 minutes after posting on Facebook! Ah the power of social media! The first request I got was for a green owl and could I make it a pirate. Many other color requests came during the next few weeks that followed.
Then someone asked if I could do puppies. I looked at my pattern and realized with a bit of tweaking I could turn the owl pattern I created into a dog with floppy ears. Then I got really crazy and knew that pointy ears could be done depending on the type of dog being requested.
I had seen a very similar shape for foxes on pinterest so I made those next. I think Emily ended up giving those to her friends on Valentine’s day. And somehow a pirate fox showed up, and matching sets with owls and foxes too.
My friend in Colorado instantly fell in love with the monsters. I think she was just waiting for something off kilter! And the monsters do tend to be bizarre, but a happy non scary bizarre! The great thing about monsters is you can make them in any color, use up scraps and add funky embellishments to them and they turn out really cute!
I can’t remember who came next but bears and monkeys followed closely behind. Elephants were in there somewhere as well as penguins. A lot of the pillows were made because someone asked for that animal. My dad said I should try a raccoon and that one still sits on a child’s rocking chair next to his bed. Then I had to make a whole rainbow of raccoons with hearts because they were so adorable!
Here is the list of all the animal pillows I have made. Some were just attempts that didn’t turn out so they are put on hold for awhile.
Princesses (including Kokeshi, and Matryoshka)
Now my question to you is what should I make next? I have plans for a mouse and a frog, just not taken time to put a prototype together. I would love to have you comment below with suggestions. Some animals are of course more difficult to do, but I am willing to try!
